Travel tips

  • The best time to visit Kenya depends on the experiences you seek, but generally, the most favorable periods are during the dry seasons. Here's a breakdown:

Wildlife Safaris: June to October: This is the dry season and the best time for wildlife viewing in parks like Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo. The lack of rain means animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. The Great Migration in the Maasai Mara typically occurs from July to October, offering spectacular views of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River.

Beach Holidays: December to March: These months are ideal for visiting Kenya's coastlines, such as Diani Beach, Lamu Island, and Malindi. The weather is warm and dry, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. July to September: Another excellent period for beach vacations with mild weather and fewer tourists.

Bird Watching: November to April: The wet season is the best time for bird watching, as migratory birds from Europe and Asia arrive. However, some parks may be harder to navigate due to the rains.

General Travel: January to February: These months offer good weather for both safaris and beach holidays, with warm temperatures and minimal rain. June to September: The cooler, dry season is comfortable for travel, safaris, and exploring various regions without the intense heat.

Climbing Mount Kenya: January to February and August to September: These are the driest and most favorable months for climbing, offering clear views and safer trekking conditions.

While Kenya is a year-round destination, the dry seasons provide the most consistent weather and optimal conditions for most outdoor activities.

  • The Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the local currency. ATMs are widely available in cities and towns. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most urban areas, but it's advisable to carry some cash for use in rural areas.

  • To enter Kenya, most travelers will require a visa. Here are the general visa options and requirements:

Visa-Free Entry: Certain nationalities do not require a visa to enter Kenya for short stays, typically up to 90 days. It's essential to check if your country falls under this category by consulting the official Kenya Immigration website or contacting the nearest Kenyan embassy or consulate.

E-Visa: Kenya offers an electronic visa (e-Visa) for travelers from most countries. This can be applied for online before traveling. The e-Visa is generally valid for 90 days and can be used for tourism, business, or medical purposes.

  • Recommended vaccinations include Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria is present in many areas, so take appropriate precautions and consult your doctor for anti-malarial medication.
